It is actually a whole lot better than Google have said themselves…Or maybe it’s just the way they said it that initially put me off.

Here is the bit they never told you – Free Viral advertising.

I thought that would get your attention, and it’s true.  Google Buzz can be used as a great tool for viral advertising, and it does it in a way that people don’t even realize they are helping to promote your company.

First of all I better explain what Google Buzz does as some of you will not have tried it yet.

In your Gmail account you will have noticed the “Buzz” option directly under your “Inbox.”

What Google Buzz does, is correlate all the pictures, RSS feeds, tweets and everything else, and makes a mega feed.  This feed will appear in the Gmail accounts of the people you have granted access to.

There are two main ways you can set your privacy options, and they are let everyone see or don’t.

What happens next is as you go about your normal business day, every time you send an email to someone Google Buzz tries to get them to look at your feed.

If they comment on your Google Buzz feed, then Google starts recommending that their Gmail contacts have a look to see what was said.

This is a just a basic run through of the process, as it is easy to understand when you are looking at it. 

The problem is that Google often annoy people, so when they released Google Buzz many marketers simply refused to even look at it.

When I realized just how viral Google Buzz actually is, I had to come on here and tell you all. 

I know Google are big and annoying. And yes they seem to be trying to take over the whole of the internet, but some of the things they make really are good.  Take Google Analytics for example, or Adwords.  Many businesses simply couldn’t function without the big G but still many resent them.

Set aside your old grudges and issues and think of an entirely free viral campaign, completely paid for and maintained on your behalf by Google.  That is what Google Buzz actually is.

Will I be using Google Buzz much myself?  You better believe it.

One word of caution though

If the thing you put on Google Buzz are going to be recommended to your business acquaintances and their friends, be careful of what you put there.

The best feature in my opinion is that Google Buzz actually will build you a follower list automatically, and that ain’t bad.

So that is the good news, but what about the bad. 

Well Google Buzz is a great addition to your marketing, and although a little invasive in my opinion, could be a real help.  With that said it does again lead you to invest more time and effort in building your business through Google. 

It’s a trade off, of privacy for advertising.  As a marketer I can really see the advantage, and I am using it just because it makes me more money.

When you started your twitter account did you ever imagine those tweets about what you are doing would end up hanging out in the giant search engines such as powerhouse Google and the new up and coming challenger Bing which is Microsoft’s new search engine?

That time has come as both companies seek agreements with Twitter to integrate their feed into the Microsoft and Google search engine results. 

What Does That Mean For Me?

It means more exposure for you the marketer!  Twitter’s updates will now be indexed in real time by Bing & Google.  Microsoft’s Bing has said that they will now assign value to your tweets just as they have websites meaning the more value you present in your tweets the more likely your tweet could be seen by the millions of searches performed on the internet daily. 

Some of the criteria they will be looking at is how many followers you have and the length of your post and if you include links in your tweet. 

Originally Microsoft was the first in talks with Twitter about this new relationship but Google soon followed behind refusing to let Microsoft’s Bing get an upper hand on them as the top search engine.  Microsoft (who paid $240 Million to hold 1.6% stake in Facebook) is countering by working with Facebook to index a portion of their updates also.  Facebook now has over 300 million users compared to Twitters over 50 million users, but a majority of Facebook’s profiles are not available to public so will not be able to be indexed by Bing.

For Twitter this will be their first introduction to some real revenue.  Microsoft & Google have not disclosed the compensation arrangement but I’m sure it’s a healthy amount, although Twitter say’s it’s not about the money.

Is the Exposure Worth the Hassle?

Both Google & Microsoft’s Bing have a challenge ahead because this is a new invitation for spammers to just spam their way into the search results.  Both companies will have to determine a way to filter relevant information from the irrelevant so it will be properly placed in search engine results.

I use Twitter alot and it does help in my business.  Of course you have to learn how to use twitter without it taking up to much of your time.  For some it does help with adding revenue in their business and for others it doesn’t.  All I can think of is the thousands upon thousand of useless tweets and spam that I have to filter through now I just hope they find a true 100% way to filter all that out.

Google and Microsoft’s Bing must have a clear plan already laid out to filter relevant results or they wouldnt have fought so hard to have this feature.  Only time will tell if this is a good thing or a bad thing for marketers.  I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.

So, with this in mind, we’ll review here how to get backlinks.  One of the most common ways people get backlinks is to submit links to your website on as many directories as humanly possible.  There are so many of these directories that it will be helpful to do this.  It may take some time, but it will be worth it.  Before you submit your link to a directory you want to do a little research to be sure first that it does indeed pass on link juice (which we will discuss at a later time) and second that it is a high value directory and will continue to pass on the link juice long ways down the road.  You also want to make sure that the directory you are submitting your link to is relevant with the site you are promoting.  Some good directories to take a look at are:

• DMOZ
• Starting Point
• Business.com
• Canny Link
• Best of The Web
• Librarians’ Internet Index
• America’s Best

Link exchanges, or reciprocal linking, are additional methods used by many webmasters and website owners to get backlinks.  If you’re looking to find out how to get backlinks, this is a helpful way; however, it’s important to link only to related sites and to not mass email website owners for reciprocity.  That is a surefire way to be ignored.  Another, possibly more fun, way to get backlinks is to write something highly controversial or exciting that everyone links to, just to share and discuss!  This is called link baiting. Then the readers will link to it over and over again to discuss, and this creates that fire and thus, your backlinks.

Here are some more ways as to how to get backlinks.  This one is good: provide quality content.  Nothing gets backlinks as much as something extremely helpful.  If someone knows that your website has some great information, they are likely to share it with others.  You can also post on a forum.  However, make sure you are not spamming.  Maybe include your link in your signature or something, but don’t spam and leave.  The proper thing to do is to join a forum and contribute value to that forum which will make the reader want to click onto your site to see what else you have to offer.  RSS feeds are another great way to get your backlinks running.  Also, article writing is a great way to have yet more backlinks.  You are usually allowed to put two links either in the article or in the author resource box that will help drive traffic to your site. 

Learning how to get backlinks is an essential ingredient in the success of many websites.  One of these final ways is to provide a “link to me” section which includes the code for someone’s website.  A good wordpress plugin for this is Link To Me.  This is a way to get people to include it in their website which makes your job easier.  These are all effective ways to get your backlinks up and running.  Once you get your backlinks up it’s only a matter of time before that traffic starts rolling in.

 The following are 12 press release writing tips that you can use:

Tip #1: When writing a press release, don’t write it as if it is for your customers, write it for editors and journalists. Provide the media with all five w’s: What, Who, When, Why, and Where.

Who is your story is about.

What’s the story is about.

The people, products, items, dates and other things related with the news – where and when.

Why is your story newsworthy?

Tip #2: Don’t write as if you’re trying to sell the reader. Remember, you are writing this press release for the media. If it’s going to be newsworthy, you need to make sure that other people will be interested in reading it.

For instance, if you have a book coming out about football drills, this will not necessarily be newsworthy. But, if you describe how a lot of football coaches have a hard time getting the football players motivated, and you include the fact that this book will tell the coaches how they can motivate their players, this would be newsworthy.

Tip #3: Don’t include a lot of fluff in your press release, just report the facts. People in the media want information and statistics.

Tip #4:  The headline and the beginning paragraph of your press release are most likely what people will be seeing on the press release websites, so be sure that they are good. Be sure that your headline is not too long and that it states the point of what your press release is about. The first sentence of the first paragraph should tell people what the article is about, and the next couple of sentences should support that.

Tip #5:  Utilize verbs that are strong and active, and try to stay away from adverbs, jargon and words that are descriptive.

Tip #6:  Begin by writing down what city the press release is coming from and what the date is.

Tip #7:   Write the press release for the media. Make your sentences short and be sure that they state the point of the article. Don’t use jargon.

Tip #8:   Be sure to put in data about your business, such as how you can be contacted and the link to your website. The majority of the time you will put this at the end of your press release.

Tip #9:  Finish your press release by using this symbol, ###. This tells the media that they have gotten all of the information.

Tip #10:  Attempt to put some call to action in the press release. What exactly should people do with the info they find in your press release? Is there an event that you want them to come to? Are you asking them to purchase something from you? Do you want them to check out your website?

Tip #11:  Be sure to send the press release to the right individual. If you are sending your press release to a directory on the internet, you don’t have to worry, but if you are sending it in to be published in your local paper, you will need to contact them and find out exactly where you should be sending the press release.

Tip #12:  Check back with them one time. It is alright to check with the person you sent your press release to and find out if they have questions for you. It is crucial to build a good professional relationship with the media, and you can do this by having a good follow-up.

You might think press releases are too hard to do and are very overwhelming, but they are really easy to do. Decide what you want your press release to be about and what benefit it will be to other people. Using one piece of paper, give all the facts. It is very common for press releases to turn into a feature that covers the entire page, so your work will definitely be worth it.
